Pioneer has been a top dog in rear-projection TVs (RPTV) for many years. The company's original Elite Pro Series of analog RPTVs have garnered much praise from the press and videophiles alike. Turning its back on analog RPTVs, Pioneer has introduced the new Elite Series PRO-510HD second-generation high-definition (HD) RPTV.The PRO-510HD is packed with features. The new "Film" color temperature mode replaces the "Warm" setting found in previous Pro Series models. Scan Velocity Modulation (SVM) improves picture definition by accelerating or decelerating the speed of the CRTs' electron beam as scenes shift from dark to bright. The PRO-510HD's incredible picture quality is mostly attributable to its excellent line doubler. This line doubler is solely a Pioneer effort, and the best of its kind from the mass-market TV manufacturers. The adjustable 3D-YC comb filter and 3D-Noise Reduction (NR) are also welcome features. These allow you to optimize the picture according the video source. Pioneer has incorporated a 72-point convergence system in the user interface, which helps you maintain a crisp, sharp picture. There are a few innovations on the audio side as well, including two forms of simulated surround sound. Also, a center channel input allows you to run a cable directly from your audio/video receiver or preamp/processor's center channel output to the TV so that you can use its built-in speakers as the center speaker in your home theater system. Elite PTV's are all 16 x 9 aspect ratio which is the high definition standard, but for flexibility with any programming type, you can choose your own preferred screen format with the multiple screen modes: Natural Wide, Cinema Wide, Zoom, 4:3 Normal and Full.

Fifty-three inches is about midway up the screen-size ladder, and Sony's KP-53V80 is about midway up the rear-projection TV feature ladder. It's got plenty of resolution for DVD and satellite sources, plus a bunch of picture enhancements. Its comb filter, a 3D-YC version, is the best of its kind at reducing cross-color and other types of artifacts that plague big-screen sets. Sony provides selectable color temperatures. The protective high-contrast screen is great for shielding the TV from harm but doesn't enhance picture quality. Fortunately, it can be removed. For convenience buffs, Sony's dual-tuner PIP (picture-in-picture) lets you view two programs at once in a variety of ways. The two channels can appear at the same size, side by side. Or you can choose the more traditional configuration of one small window within a larger one. The small box can be moved anywhere around the screen. The KP-53V80 lets you label up to eight of your favorite channels. The remote control, which is preprogrammed to operate other Sony gear and many brands of cable boxes, includes both backlighting and a joystick. S-Link jacks enable communication with other similarly equipped Sony components. An audio system with 20 watts x 2 channels and simulated surround sound completes the feature package.

The Toshiba 61H70 is a 61-inch projection television that comes with all the trimmings. A picture tube--or cathode ray tube (CRT)--has an electron gun that presents an image by sending the electron beam to the tube's faceplate. The Toshiba 61H70 has three such tubes, in red, green, and blue. They use fine phosphor for high resolution, brightness, and color purity.

For fine tuning, use the remote control to adjust nine points on the screen. The result is very good focus and superior picture quality.

With A/V outputs you can send the audio/video signal to a VCR for recording. The fixed audio outputs can also be sent to an A/V receiver, and provide a cleaner signal than variable audio outputs. An extra set of front A/V inputs allows you to connect a camcorder or other portable device.

The Toshiba 61H70 has ColorStream HD component video inputs, the best inputs to use for today's high-resolution digital sources, such as a DVD player or an HDTV set-top box.

The universal remote has been programmed to operate the TV, most VCRs, and cable boxes. Many of the keys are illuminated for easy access when watching TV in a dark room. The remote accesses all TV functions with an icon-based on-screen display. This full-featured system can be operated in English, French, or Spanish. In addition, the remote learns the codes of other remotes.

You can input your 12 favorite channels and easily scan through only those stations. Pressing the return button sends you to the last channel you were viewing. This allows you to easily switch back and forth between two channels. You can label your channels by putting the call letters (e.g. ABC, HBO) on the screen along with the station numbers.

At the touch of a button, a sleep timer allows you to fall asleep and program the TV to turn off in 15-minute intervals for up to three hours.

Any time you press the mute button, closed captioning automatically engages. So, if one viewer needs to answer the telephone, another can still read along.

Now you can watch two channels at once, or find out what's on all your favorite channels. Two built-in tuners allow picture-in-picture without the use of a VCR. In single box mode, you can change the size of the sub-picture, move it to different locations on the screen, or freeze it. Six- and nine-box modes allow continuous channel previewing in multiple sub-pictures along the bottom of the screen. You can also use picture-outside-picture, whereby half the screen is used for the main image, while the other half is used for nine sub-pictures.

The new V-chip lets parents decide which show ratings are appropriate for their children. The TV will block out the audio and video of any program with an inappropriate rating. Parents use a code to override the system.
