Summary: Good price - couple of sore spots
Comment: Firstly, got a great price for the unit a $332 and free shipping. This unit has a couple of problems for me though: 1) there is no switched power receptacle for the sub-woofer to plug in (hence sub-woofer stays on all the time); 2) unit distorts picture from analog VCR when fast forwarding making it hard to know when you get to your spot (skipping commercials etc); 3) unit seems to delay the signal enough to create echoes when you turn on a TV to the same channel; 4) Some functions can't be done from remote (like station presetting); 5) There is no record select making it difficult if not impossible (I haven't figured it out yet) to record from one unit to another (eg: DVD to separate VCR) - my prior switch had a video select and record select in addition to selecting the input source (the record select would allow you to select an source for output to the units that can record).
Don't have an HD TV yet, so can't vouch for the HDMI upconvert logic etc.
Mute and volume buttons could be placed a little better on remote since they're used the most.

Summary: Works Perfectly, but has been replaced by New Model
Comment: I purchased this AV Receiver as part of a HDTV/Receiver/Speaker package, but purchased the receiver from another vendor because the silver version of the 605 was no longer available from Amazon. It now appears to me that TX-SR606 model has been released, replacing the 605.
My review is of the 605, but the feature set seems similar with one exception. Where the 605 offers 2 HDMI 1.3 inputs the 606 model offers 4.
I can see how 2 HDMI inputs might not be enough for some owners. In my situation I have a Satellite TV Box (1st input) and a Sony Playstation 3 w/Blu-Ray DVD player (2nd input). In my system the game box and the Blu-Ray DVD player are both coming over the same HDMI cable, so I only need 1 HDMI input to handle both the game and DVD player. If you have a different system you might need a 3rd HDMI input in order to have separate DVD and game box inputs into the receiver. In that case the 605 is one input short, and the 606 covers you with an additional input to spare.
Two weeks into my ownership of my 605 I finally have the receiver dialed in, and I love it. The PCM multichannel handling (Direct mode) makes a huge difference for both the game box and the Blu-Ray player. The FM tuner is plenty sensitive enough in my urban neighborhood, and receiver does not run as hot as I feared. I don't have mine in a rack enclosure, it's just sitting on the shelf with airspace above it.
The Audyssey Dynamic EQ setup is a little clunky - it seems like the phone always rings when I'm using it - but it worked and was accurate. It set up a nice tight soundfield which I only had tweak a bit to reach perfection on my 5.1 speaker system.
With four HDMI inputs on the 606 you would seem to be future-proofed better than the 605 model, but note that the 605 received a high rating from CNET, and the Playstation handles the upscaling of standard 4:3 DVDs, so the Onkyo 605's low marks from the CNET Editors for its upscaling is not a factor for Sony Playstation owners.
I paid $399 at Vann's. Note that I haven't compared the 605 with the 606 feature-for-feature, so there may be more differences. I am cross-posting this review over on the 606 product page as well.
It's larger than I envisioned, since the photo doesn't offer any scale, so if you're tight for space note the dimensions and measure your Receiver location. Leave some air space... and enjoy.

Summary: Great Receiver Great Price!
Comment: I bought the Onkyo 605 about 2 months ago from Crutchfield and love it. I replaced a one year old Pioneer that sounded great but didn't have Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. I also needed to have HDMI 1.3 for video and audio. I have the Panasonic BD-30 blu-ray player and wanted to have my receiver decode the HD audio formats. What a HUGE difference! Of course, it depends on your speaker set-up (fronts Infinity Beta 20, center Yamaha NS-C225, rear Bose Acoustimass 5, and the BEST part Velodyne DLS-3500 subwoofer). Even with my mid-level speakers it sounds AMAZING with this receiver. The Onkyo 605 handles everything from movies to music perfectly. It is a clear, crisp, richer, fuller sound without distortion. As others had mentioned, it runs very warm but not any hotter than my Pioneer receiver. It NEVER runs warm in standby mode it's always cool like it's off. I have had NO issues with popping or humming of any kind. It was a great price which is half of what other receivers go for with all the features that the Onkyo 605 has. You can't go wrong with this one.

Summary: This is one hot receiver!
Comment: I have been very happy so far with this receiver. The various listening modes are great, it has a healthy number of input/outputs, and it was relatively easy to set-up. The only fault I can find with my Onkyo receiver to this point is that it really runs very hot. Even just sitting in standby mode it is quite warm, and after a couple of hours of sound decoding, putting your hand on it is very unpleasant. You will half-expect it melt into AVR soup. I have found no indication that this in any way impacts performance, though, you may be most comfortable if you're able to put the receiver in a very well ventilated place. I would definitely recommend this product, the price/performance margin is very favorable.

Summary: Unbeatable for the price
Comment: If you want a receiver that has all the new technology but doesn't break the bank, look no further, you've found it. This thing has features that receivers twice as much don't have. You have full HDMI 1.3 compatibility (which isn't even yet fully utilized) making it pretty future proof. There are a plethora of inputs all going out (and being upconverted mind you) to one HDMI output. At 90W per ch, there's plenty of power to fill even a pretty large living room. For $380, I bet you won't find a better receiver than this.
