Comment: I received this product the next day using the free shipping option. Package was solid good padding comes in original box. Took me about 15 minutes to setup. I am using all HDMI so the setup is real clean. I needed to read the instructions for how to set the HDMI but that is about it.
It comes with a mic for automatic configuration. I have not done this yet because I need to connect my center in-wall speaker. Using all polk audio speakers and it sounds awesome. For 318.99 silver you can't go wrong. Save money and get the silver... its in a closet anyway. Overall I love this product, its sounds clean and is easy to use. The remote does a fine job.
The reason why this product is discounted so heavily is because they just came out with the tx-sr606 which has 4 hdmi in and 1 out compared to 2 hdmi in and 1 out. Thats all the difference there is and $200 more. Ha. You can buy a hdmi switch for the difference.

Comment: This is a great receiver. I picked it up first from [...] then sent it back for a refund and bought it from circuit city instead. More on that later. In a nutshell this is a great product. I recently just finished buying a set of polk and boston acoustic speakers to set up my 5.1 theater system. Setting up this receiver was rather painless. The user interface was intuitive and very user-friendly. Instructions were extremely detailed and the microphone helped immensely with speaker calibration. I do understand that some of the 605's have had trouble with popping noises and running really hot. Onkyo mentioned in their product manual that some of the older 605's may have problems because of a needed firmware update for dolby digital playback. The newer models don't seem to have this problem. So far my receiver plays great with no popping. It can get warm at times but if you make sure it has good circulation it shouldn't be a problem either. The remote is also very handy and works well with most brands of tvs and dvd players. It didn't work with at&t's new uverse cable box but it is compatible with numerous cable and satellite service provider boxes including direct tv. Now for the sad news. If you buy this from amazon.com make sure you really want it from them. It clearly states on onkyo's web site that onkyo will not honor any warranty service whether it be limited or extended if you purchase your receiver from an unauthorized dealer. The list of authorized dealers are on the web site and amazon is NOT an authorized dealer. Even the warranty with NEW that sometimes will show on this product page will not be honored since NEW's warranty policy states that they will not honor warranty service on a product that does not orginally have a manufacturer's warranty. So that is the heads up guys. You will save money buying it from amazon.com but it will come to you without a warranty, manufacturer's or extended.

Comment: I've had this receiver for about 7 months now (bought it Thanksgiving'07 from Amazon). I really like this product. This is my first Onkyo. Prior to this, I had a Yamaha HTIB bought in 2004. Compared to that, this product absolutely kicks some serious u-know-what! I have never experienced the 'humming' sound that a lot of users have complained about. My entertainment unit is quite large and the area around the receiver is really well ventilated. In order to experience good sound - make that great sound, you need good speakers too. I bought a set of JBL (entry level) Monitor level speakers (again from Amazon) and a Dayton Sub (from Parts-express). Combined, the whole system is amazing!! I have paired this whole system to my 42" Panasonic Plasma and PS3 and as a result I'm in movie heaven! I have played a few music CDs (using PS3) via this receiver and the sound is quite good. I found that I could get better sound by custom setting rather than rely on the Audyssey system. But, this could be due to the acoustics in my room (always a major factor in experiencing great sound). The unit as a whole is quite heavy, so make sure you place it on a sturdy base with ample room around it. As other users have said, this one does run quite 'hot', but not anymore than others in the same cateogry I'd think. It looks like the price has come down drastically these last few months (I bought it when it was ~420 on Amazon). This is definitely a great buy! All the latest audio formats supported are quite useless really. AFAIK, most BD players (at least the PS3) decodes Dolby/DTS HD signals into 5.1 PCM, which in itself is also fantastic. However, there dont seem to be any players yet that'd directly pass the audio signal from the DVD to the receiver and let the receiver's in-built Dolby/DTS HD codecs do the job. If someone knows this to not be true, I'd love to hear from them! In summary, this is a great buy, you can't go wrong, but spend some extra dough and get a good set of speakers to truly experience great sound. Oh, and before I forget, I didnt have any problems with the HDMI conversion as well :)

Comment: I've been a longtime Onkyo fan, and when my TX-DS575 receiver which I bought in 2000 died from a power surge I decided to stick with a product I was comfortable with. The 605 offered a promising upgrade, with 7.1 channels and 2 zone speaker outputs and 105w per channel. I thought it was interesting that Onkyo offered an optional ipod dock, but when I found that the ipod dock they offered connected using RCA inputs I decided to not opt for this. Some manufacturers offer a dedicated ipod input that has a customized input so that in order to use the dedicated input on the receiver you have to buy their dock with their custom plug. Onkyo decided not to do this which I think is much better. I definitely would not recommend buying the Onkyo ipod dock because you can buy comparable ones for 1/3 the price. For some reason the receiver was shipped with a non-english manual, which only came in french and spanish. I'm not sure if this is Onkyo's fault, or the fault of TigerDirect. However, I was able to easily download the english manual off of Onkyo's website. I was really disappointed with the remote control available, since it was not actually a learning remote but rather a programmable remote similar to the replacement remotes you can buy from Radio Shack where you just input a remote code. Fortunately the receiver is reverse compatible with the RC391M remote that came with my old 575, but I was surprised that a higher model number receiver produced 8 years later had a less advanced remote. Overall I was pretty happy with the receiver, but you will probably have the same problems I have with the component video switching. It has dramatically altered the color of my HD programming, I have lost pretty much all of my reds, blacks, and greens, however it seems to transfer blues and yellows pretty accurately. I haven't fully tested using the HDMI switching, but I'm not sure if there will really be much difference.
