Summary: Not a bad remote at all
Comment: I only have a couple of problems with this remote. You have to keep pressing the buttons for dvd, vcr, audio, sat, etc. to change the setting. That sounds like I'm complaining a lot, and I am. (sue me. ha ha) The other is this. I bought this as a replacement for a remote that quit working. I can't teach it the functions that I need through the "learn" command since the orginal remote quit. Which kind of defeats the purpose of having a new remote. I have one of those all in in one home theater units and the remote wouldn't allow me to set the VCR clock and local channels after a power outage.
Other than that, I have no problem with it.

Summary: Works beautifully!! .... After setup.
Comment: This remote is the best I have found without breaking into the ridiculously priced $100+ Logitech Harmony remotes. I have succesfully condensed 4 remotes down to 1; getting my Tivo DVR, Sony DVD recorder, Sony audio receiver, and Sansui television to all work as I please. The one negative is that it does take some time to get this remote set up to how you will want it. All my components did have codes listed in the instructions, but none were able to get complete functionality from them. Instead, I had to use the remote's learning feature to capture the infrared signals from the original remotes, and program them over the buttons on the universal remote. Invariably you will eventually come across some commands on the original remote that you forgot to program onto the universal one, so remember the whole process will take some time, but eventually this one remote will be able to do everything you used to need 2 or more remotes for.

Summary: No Audio Punch Through!?
Comment: The remote would be fine, except it will not allow you to "punch through" the volume to your receiver, only your TV. This makes the whole thing pretty useless.

Our home theater, like almost everyone's, uses our surround theater for sound. Why you can't punch through the volume controls to it is completely baffling. I did a web search and it's apparently baffling to everyone else as well.

Back to the store it goes! Utterly worthless.

Summary: It worked great until it didn't
Comment: I bought this remote with hopes of consolidating down to just one remote. Initially I was able to get my TV, DVR, DVD, and VCR to all work flawlessly with it.

I wish the story ended there, but this thing just stopped working one day. It lost all of its settings, and though I was able to reprogram them, the learning function seems to be permanently gone.

I strongly recommend you avoid this product.

Summary: Cheap Is as Cheap Does
Comment: There are a lot of remote controls on the market from the $999.95 (SRP) Philips Pronto TSU7500 on down. I didn't want anything too fancy but I do need to control several devices. The PMDVR8 seems to work adequately (for my needs) with my Toshiba TV and Mitsubishi VCR. I was pleasantly surprised to have it operate at least some of my Kenwood A/V receiver/Tuner/Amplifier box (I figure I can program the rest of the controls I need but I haven't gotten around to it yet.) I was astounded when the remote control failed utterly to get any response from my HDRW720/17 DVR made by Philips - the same company that makes the remote!

The story gets worse. I've tried to contact Philips customer service both by phone and on the web. So far I've had inordinate delays, mechanical voice recognition systems that go on forever, been hung up on, and spoke to one person who barely spoke English and seemed to have an IQ of about 70. Needless to say, they weren't helpful.

I don't expect to spend much money on ANY Philips products in the future! Caveat Emptor.
