Summary: No volume control problems for us
Comment: We recently got a Directv Tivo unit and wanted to have a Tivo compatible remote for both of us for all our stuff. The PMDVR8 is a good unit. It controls our DVD player, VCR, Directv - Tivo box and our Magnavox/Philips TV without a hitch.
We don't have a volume control problem with the TV with this unit. We did have a problem with the original Tivo remote but then tried a different TV code number and that fixed that problem.
The device / code number list included with this unit is impressive and all our devices programmed in without having to resort to "learning" anything.
We will be buying another one, for a spare, in case the dogs mess one of them up.

Summary: Not even close, pathetic actually....
Comment: I recently purchased this remote and high hopes it would replace my dying sony rmvL1000 since i didi'nt need to control 12 components, and I had cracked the LCD screen [and even dropped it in some soup!, but still works]. Saw this remote and saw how much thinner lighter it was than other remotes out there and thought i'd give it a shot. Boy was I wrong.
THIS REMOTE DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH MEMORY!!!
That facts alone makes it a loser. As with any learning remote it should have enough memory, in case you have some components that are'nt listed in its "universal" list. Out of 8 possible components to control i can only control 4 properly before it ran out of gas. The receiver volume punch thru was'nt that big of a deal since you can reprogram the volume + - and mute keys to the receiver but there in lies the problem and you run out of memory really quickly by the time you reprogram all the modes to control the receiver.
They really need to allow people to give 0 stars reviews for products that just dont cut it, like this one.

Summary: Can be programmed for Receiver Volume!
Comment: Nice remote, no backlight - but for $15 its a deal.
As some have noted, the volume controls in TV mode cannot be programmed for your receiver/preamp.
HOWEVER, the Level+ and Level- buttons (the 4 arrow buttons at the bottom of the remote) can be programmed to control volume for just about any receiver using the learning function (while still in TV mode!).
I have a Toshiba TV and have the Level+ & Level- buttons programmed to control the volume on my cambridge audio receiver - I am using another remote with the Rotel Preamp on my other system.
In summary, works great for what I need it for with the very minor inconvenience of having to using the lower buttons for volume control (hence 4 stars).

Summary: All other reviewers are right!
Comment: The one-star complaints and five-star praises are both reasonable. I needed to replace my tivo remote (the dog "personalized" the original), and i figured rather than buy a new one from Tivo I'd just run up to the BB and get a universal remote that would also handle the cable box (motorola/comcast) and the DVD player (a Sony).
This remote handles those three things. It isn't perfect - no matter which TV code I use (several work for my Trinitron), i can't get the most-obvious TV/Video button to work correctly. Instead, I have to use an obscure "input" button located on the next to last row, to switch from Video 1 to Video 2 to Video 3. Annoying. Not bad, just annoying.
The Tivo controls are not quite as handy as the original Tivo remote, but then, that original was a masterpiece of design, IMHO. This remote is a reasonable replacement. Another reviewer mentioned that the speed was a bit slower. That's true - just a bit. In my very personal experience, that problem is offset by the fact that the cable box speed is WILDLY improved over my original Comcast-provided remote. One goes faster, one goes slower.
All in all, it's a 3-star deal. For a cheapskate who will NEVER spend $200 on some hot-shot LCD screen remote, I'm reasonably happy.

Summary: Great remote; don't lose the instructions
Comment: I lost the directions (with the remote codes) to this, and I can't seem to find them online anywhere. Oh, well.

Other than that, it's a great remote, and it actually WILL pass along receiver volume controls. The trick is, you have to override the volume up, volume down, and mute buttons in the TELEVISION mode with learned frequencies from your receiver's remote. If the remote will control your receiver while in TV mode, it automatically passes along the customized codes to all the other modes, too.
Works great.
